Week 15 Discussion

Language and Culture

Let’s start with the quiz!

Get out your device, use the access code on the board, and complete the quiz!

Quick Review

  • What’s most important about this unit is that nothing we do with language is detached from the rest of what’s going on around us – our bodies, our societies, and our pop worlds!
  • Back to the question from the beginning – what is language?
    • Natural language vs. conlang
  • What do you need to make your own language?
  • Why do we do it?
  • Who cares?

More fun with conlangs!

  • A news show – CBS Sunday Morning – recently highlighted the work of David and Jessie Peterson, some awesome conlangers

Cool stuff about Chokobsa: https://www.omniglot.com/conscripts/neochakobsa.htm If you have a class that is really intrigued by this stuff, you can give them the link above, show them the writing system, and get them to pick apart the writing in this image

Quick Review

Three basic modes of human communication

Review from Week 14

  • In your groups, list anything you can think of as a way that an animal communicates, including what you think it means
    • Ex. “My dog whimpers when she’s hungry.”
  • As a class, come together to discuss these forms of communication
    • Each group will now select/be assigned one animal
  • Now, back in your groups – describe as many of the ways that this specific animal communicates , and explain how these modes of communication do or do not align with what we said about human language
    • Each group will do research and explain to the class, so have someone take notes!

Activity time!

Questions about the Data Analysis assignment?

    • “Why linguistics?”

  • Be working on the Data Analysis assignment
    • Read instructions, ask questions
